The person standing in front of us, whether an adult or child, provides us with opportunities to learn about ourselves through learning about them; we are always learning together. It is when we explore our self in the collective with the “other”, that we get feedback and new perspectives we have never seen before.

The dynamic exchange that occurs in the learning process, therefore gives us a vast understanding of the incredible depth and breadth within each child with whom we interact. This understanding is so important for us in our role as parents and educators, as it allows us to remember that the inside of the child is not ours to understand, rather the inside of ourselves is the work.

There is no point in trying to read the mind of your student or child. Instead, learn how to better communicate with them by learning to communicate better within yourself. This awakening and growth in you can give them strategies for their journey, and provide you with the resilience and wisdom to be there in the right moment to catch them if they slip in theirs!

Why is this supportive process tricky?

The challenge for most of us as educators in homes or schools, is that we have our own needs and wants, some of which we are aware and others that remain hidden until we go looking for them. All the teachings from Awakened Education are designed to support you in finding about ourselves so we can see our children without our own needs muddying the view.

We rant and rage often about “why can’t they just be more respectful!!”—oblivious to the fact that these young people are learning what that means from us. From our actions, we are constructing meaning with them. 

Meaning Making

This is so important for us in our role as an educator as it allows us to remember that the inside of the child or student is not ours to understand, rather the inside of ourselves is the work. Learn how to give them strategies for their journey and be there to catch them if they slip!

This first Principle has two key features:

  • Communication
    • It is essential to learn how to communicate effectively with your interior and exterior Self
    • Communication skills with your child or student allows you to support their journey whilst acknowledging yours
  • Developmental Lines
    • Interests and skills with vary depending on your developmental level and theirs
    • Acknowledge the needs of both child and adult to increase their skills and knowledge, find a way to support both in their growth
    • Remain aware of the essential role that robust and strong concrete stage learning plays in later stage development and give it time and opportunity to grow in students by allowing your earlier perspectives opportunities to grow and emerge from shadow or forgetting
